Default need help!!!

I have a 1.8t a4 2001 model. my wife called me and says the car went dead and won't restart. I get the carhauler and take it home. The engine is turning over, well the crank is turning but the cam is not. I pulled the cover to check the belt and it's good. I can't see down to the bottom of the timing belt but I don't understand why the crank is turning but the cam pulley is not. Does anyone have a clue?

The timing belt is not broken. Only has 60k on it.

It may not be "broken", but a tooth or two may have sheared off. So it doesn't appear broken but its way out of time and destroying your engine.

If you're cranking it and the crank is turning and not the cam(s). Then you're almost defenitly bending/bent some valves. You could be super lucky and not have bent any, but the odds are if you cranked it after it "died" then you did.

Yeah, it only having 60K doesnt rule out the timing belt. It sure sounds like thats what happened though.. you checked though, and there is still tension on the belt? That seems impossble, if the cams arent turning.

you should still have a warranty. I think it says for routine maintence to replace the belt at 60k. If your under warranty and haven't actually gone over 60k (not even 1/10th of a mile) then they'll most likely replace any damaged parts.

Warranty is 50K and is likely expired.

Timing belt change was 105K maintenance item. However, I believe that Audi May have some extended coverage for engine damage due to premature failure of timing belt. Certainly 60K fits. Contact your dealer or Audi of America and see what is up.

Thanks for the replys guys. I pulled the top cover off the belt and it is still tight. The only other thing I can come up with is what bhj0887 said. It must have a bald spot on the belt. Has anyone ever lost a belt and not had valve damage? I will contact audi america monday. Unfortunatly the Audi dealer I purchased the car from Dean Mcrary in Mobile Al is a ******* ripoff.

I got the official word today from the Audi mechanic, "sludge" he said the top of the engine was starved for oil and seized the cams up which in turn locked up the timing belt. He say's I need a whole new engine. Now I'm waiting to find out what Audi America is going to do about it. I bought the car with 59,000 miles and I only use mobil 1 synthetic. The mechanic thinks the sludge was caused during the mileage previous to my ownership. Don't think it won't happen to you better get yours checked.
