I also owne a b6 and I have taken out every part but the center console.
So I just went out and looked at my car and it looks like you do have to take out the hole console and mostlikley the radio/heat controls.
Sorry.
you must be loaded to be throughing all that money around the car...ha ha

what????
All you have to do is this particular section...
All you do is pry it up where it begins to curve down towards the cig lighter and hand brake area. Two clips hold it secure, Then two more further in towards the aluminum shift plate. Once that thing pulls out you need to remove the shift **** (also explained in the tech article linked above). Then you remove the aluminum piece as stated in the article.
its not really that hard for the newer cars (99.5 +)
All you have to do is this particular section...
Also on newer A4's the shifter surround (not the aluminum piece) pulls up (on older cars there is no surround) with some force. It is simply clipped in there and must come out before the ash tray. The Ash tray also should pop out with a little force on both old and new models

Well i got one more thing to add to all that hehehehe, i'm not tryin to be mean or anything but if that car is an '04 shouldnt it have warranty on it so you just take it to the dealer or service shop, maybe a good suggestion! BYE BYE
