Default New guy looking for the right A4

This is my first post here and let me start off by saying there is a great wealth of knowledge here. I have read the stickied threads and gained a ton of knowledge!
But I do still have some questions; here is the run down......
Im in the market for an A4 (used). I have about $17,000.00 to spend and a buddy of mine will get me whatever I need from manheim auction so the prices I can get will probably be unbeatble (at least I hope). I have been researching the motor options and am pretty sure I want a 1.8T Quattro. I am however unsure of the changes throughout the model years. I think I want a 2004 as they are the newest I can affod with under 40,000 miles. What were (if any) the changes made in 2004? Is there a better year like 2003 or something offered in 2005 that is just wonderful? I will be purchasing in about a week so any info would be greatly appreciated. I know a good amount about cars and have a supercharged mustang so I am familiar with most of the 1.8 power adders.
I guess im just looking for some insite from the experts before I make the plunge. Any and all advice is MUCH appreciated!
Josh

Based on your post, I assume you have decided on a B6 over a B5?

I think the most differences lie in the 2002 B6 versus the 03-05s. An easy example is the 02 sport suspension being lowest versus others. I also think painted lowers came standard in 2005?

engine wise..or suspension wise..nothin really changed from 2003-2005..like wolfdog said 2002 sports are the lowest of all years..there are also ultrasports(USP) models that came out i believe in 2004..but harder to find depending on area..they started to offer 6speeds i believe in 2003(not exactly sure on that)..but nothing major has changed in those years..

6 sp in the 3.0 is 2002 1.8t is later i know that, once youve made up your mind about engine id get the 04 new is always better, obv go standard and then start modding if your gonna get a good deal then good 4 u spend the rest on chip intake exhaust and maybe new turbo beef up those ponies

The price differences between 2003 and 2004 are wild. I can pick up a loaded 2003 1.8twith just under 40,000 miles for $14,500, whereas the exact same car but an 04 goes for $17,000!!! Im trying to find if there is anything diferent between these two years to justify that kind of prcie hike. It would be stupid not to spend less cash on the 03 if they are indeed the same car, riiight???

look to see if warranty is still available..also are they both non-sport or sport..also make sure both at auto or manuel..could just be flaws in paint and interior..maybe dents..(i dunno) but the price seems to be about right with 1 year difference..what does kelly blue book say its worth from 03 to 04..?
