Default New Key fob

I just bought a sweet 97 A4 1.8t. The key fob is functional but totally beat to crap. I have heard you can buy them from other places than the dealer and then have them programmed at the dealer. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

you could try looking on Ebay for one.. and you should be able to program it yourself..

I tell everyone this, it worked for me. Flirt with the people at the service desk and they'll give you one for free!!!!

But yet none of you take my advice and run with it..... you might just get lucky and be pleasantly surprised when it works.

How do you program it? Mine has stopped working (battery is nearly new), and the synchronization trick listed in my 2001 Passat manual doesn't help.

Here are instructions for programming a key FOB

1. Take one key and put it in the ignition and turn the ignition ON.
2. Close and lock the driver's door with the second key (while the ignition remains on).
3. Take the first remote and press the "UNLOCK" button ONCE only - alarm will 'beep' but door will remain locked.
4. With the key, unlock and lock the door again.
5. Test the remote by pressing the "UNLOCK" button again - door should unlock.
6. Open the door and turn ignition off and back on again using the first key.

Thanks all. I will give ebay a look. Do i have to search for a fob for the specific year or is there a time frame such as 97 to 01 or anything like that?
