Default New owner needs help - cars burp'en

My A4 1.8T Quatro has a problem. I'm driving down the highway and the car will 'burp'. Meaning the rev's drop and the EPC and CHECK ENGINE indicators flash on and then go off. This happens at any time, during any weather, at any speed. Other than that the car starts and runs perfectly.

I took it into a dealer and was told that the CHECK ENGINE light did not register a code with the computer. So the tech. said I should replace the 'bypass value' on the emissions control. This SHOULD fix the problem but there's no way to tell.

How hard would it be to replace this myself. I'm very handy... brakes, oil changes that sort of thing.

Any suggestions or help would be very appreciated. I don't want to throw money away...

Turns out the ECM was shot. The dealer was going to charge me $900 + installation. When I put up a fuss they came back and said the ECM was covered under the emissions warranty!

All I had to pay was the time to find the problem! $300... not good but a whole lot better than $900 + $300.

So it pays to not take things at face value.

if you really had to - you could have bought a used ECM for $150-200
