Hey just wanted to let you guys who replaced your ignition switches yourselves, Audi charges $180 to do it. So I wrote up a phony invoice from an auto repair shop, and sent it in along with my recall notice to audi for the reimbursement check. Dont know if it will work but worth a try for $180, considering I spent $18 on the part.

wow, I just bought my 97 2.8QM on Friday and I thought the ignition was just destroyed by the previous owner. Sometimes it takes a minute or two to put the key in, and when I start it, it stays in the on position and keeps starting. Sounds like a really bad sqeauling belt or something, until I turn it back a notch. Hope I can get this for free, or else Ill be buying a new starter soon!

try turning the key while putting force on the steering wheel, from side to side. it should unlock itself.
