Default Newbie her with some Q's

Alrite well i have a a jeep and i am gettign a little bit tired, and poor, of these gas prices going up and my jeep only gets about 11 or 12ish mpg and it is killing me because my college is about 20 miles away and i make that trip 5 days and week and some times i even go there twice so it is really gettign to me. so i made some cash this summer and i really dont just want to dump it in the gas tank whne i could just pick up and new, used car.
Well to get to the point i was looking into an audi a4 and i really only have like 10000ish to spend and i was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a 97-99 a4 with roughly 90000 to 100000 miles on it. is there really anythign i should look for in buying? what is the main difference between the 1.8 and the 2.8? what kind of milage do that get? any help would be greatly apreciated
Thanks
Ted

2.8s usually get about 20-22 mpg...1.8s get close to 30+...you should be able to find plenty of 1.8Ts for under 10 grand...since youre in college, i STRONGLY suggest you buy a car at least 1000 under your budget, and save the extra doh for future maintenance/repairs

as bent frame stated.....the 2.8 is a 6 cylinder...so it obviously uses more gas than the 1.8T, i would go with a 1.8T *considering i have one* becuase the 2.8's feel a bit sluggish....so extra gas mileage......peppy response....where can you go wrong with the 1.8T?

well i went to go take a 97 a4 2.8 for a test drive and it seemed a bit sluggish and needed tires, brakes, and some ignition module, which the guy said most audi's need them. but i just wasn't impressed very much. my jeep is faster and is a little bit more comfortable but i still am going to test drive one with a 1.8t tomorrow.

another question, what is the difference between the a4 and a6, other than size? i really liked how it drove but it just was a bit sluggish and if get a new car i want it to be as fast or faster than my jeep with the 5.2 V8.
Thanks
Ted

More comfortable, obviously you don't have a wrangler. 5.2 V8, must be a Grand Cherokee. for 10,000 you could find an A4 with waaaaay less than 90,000 miles. I just got a 98 with 60,000 for 8500. Shop around, you could find some with pretty low miles. Good luck with the searching. And any A4 will get much better gas mileage than the 5.2. Good luck with the searching.

wow, holy ghost, thas pretty good

i found my 1.8t for 8grand and it had 120thousand miles on it, with new tires, fluids and brakes.

i get 32 mpg on the highway and around 28 in the city, and when you wanna flog ur car, the turbo is weak, but present.

the only downside is that the maitnance shedule for the 1.8t's is every 5thousand miles, while the 2.8's are every like 6.5 or 7thousand miles (cant remember) but u get my point. the 1.8t's are also known for having more problems than the 2.8's and with audi's outrageous prices, that can get to be a pain the the wallet

Hello ted, If your into modding, get a 1.8t, if ur not really goign to be modding get urself a 30v 2.8, if u ever do want to mod, there are options for it too.

thanks for all the help. sometime in the next couple of days i am gonna do look at a 1.8t with 70000 thousand miles on it and it is i believe 8500. and i am into "modding" i got the disease with my jeep with putting a lift and big tires to K&N, its much more fun than stock.
Right now i think i am just going to look around and try and sell my jeep instead of trade in to get more cash. i'm new to the audi world and i was wondering if there are things i should look for in buying one? like if some have some problems and what not.
also do any of you know any good audi places in the chicago land area, i'm in the west subs.
Thanks for all the help
Ted
