Default Newbie looking to buy 2.8 A4

Well it took me forever to finally find a audi forum that seems to be active and has some good infomation. But anyways, I am looking to replace my daily driver with a 96-99 Audi A4 2.8 w/ 4WD. I would like to know what price range you guys think the avg 96-97 2.8 A4 goes for with roughly 80-100k miles.

I recently test drove a 96 2.8 A4 and thought it was really nice car to have. This one in particular had 99,000 miles on it and isn't in the greatest condition. The biggest problem is the leather seats, they are totally messed up and would definatly need to be replaced or re-covered. Then the drivers side door must have slammed so may times into a wall when the owner got out that the whole edge has some form of rust (Not enough to see when the door is closed, but still a problem). The sunroof doesn't work, and the carpet needs a really good clean. Other then those things, the car felt like it ran pretty good and had nicks and scratches here and there. The timing belt and water pump have not been replaced either. So the price the guy wants to see the car for $5500. I told him $5000. So do you think this car is worth the 5k or should I keep looking for something that doesn't need this much work for a little bit more? (Which is the reason I asked for a pretty good avg price)

Sorry I wrote a lot, but even after reading a ton of posts I have a good amount of questions. Thanks!

Hey Ice
The 5k sounds a little much.
Maybe 4500$
Is your heart set on the 2.8 ? Because if you are planning on modding, the 1.8T might be a better choice.

Dave666 - Ya I was thinking 5k was probably still too much. But then they seem pretty hard to find around Chicago. As for mods, I only plan to do some basic apperance things like rims, grille, ect. Also I don't feel like messing with a high milage turbo car (Nor do I plan to do engine mods) which is why I'm looking for a 2.8. I have another car that I use for car shows and has more then enough power . So the audi I'm looking for will be used just as a nice daily car, nothing crazy.

$5000 would be a good price if the timing belt was done...it should've been done 20-30k miles ago

bentframe & Dave666 - Ya I'm pretty sure it hasn't been repalced. Granted I don't wish to deal with it, it won't be a problem to replace myself. I'm thinking I'll try to get it for 4500 if he can't sell it (remeber those leather seats are fucked too)

if you've got the tools, time, and know-how, you can do the timing belt and everything else that needs to be done with it for about 250 bucks. the seats will be harder to find but if youre patient and keep your eye out on ebay and at wrecking yards, you should be able to find a good pair at a good price... www.car-part.com might have something. if you can get it for 4500 that's not a bad deal. i definitely wouldn't be driving it with 100k miles on the original belt, if it snaps your car is done for

bentframe - I'm assuming this would be something that could be done in a day while taking my time. I own more then enough tools, but if audi's need something special then I may not have it. However a friend of a friend is a tech for Audi and said he'd be willing to help if I couldn't figured something out. From what I've read on the board tho, you can pretty much use regular tools to get the job done. Well I'll still contunue my search for the audi as I'm not sure the guy with the 96 A4 is willing to go down to 4500 (I wouldn't mind paying more if it didn't need sooo much work).

car sounds fine for running wise. (Timing belt dont even drive it any further. I thought i was pushing it at 76000 mi) if it snaps teh engine is toast. I bought my car for 11,000 99, with 76000 mi. Good condt interior and 18 wheels. I had him take the price of teh timeing belt (aorund 1000 installed) and teh otehr needed maintenmce (water oump, and new cltch and fly wheel). Give him 5000 if he will pay for teh timing belt and otehr matience. Except teh seats and dings and taht stuff.
