Newbie needs info on A4's
I think the 3.0 has very nice power, it’s so smooth and refined, but can still push you to the seat a bit if you want it too, I love it! But then again I have a feeling it would be a lot more boring if I had an auto. I also agree that no Audi should come with FWD.
OK, I'll call "uncle" at this point........
Give me some guidance on what I should be looking for in a Cabriolet. Quattro? 3.0? I'm really not interested in modding a 1.8 so that it puts out the same HP numbers as a 3.0. I just want a nice, soild driver that I won't have to work on 24/7. My understanding is that this car (cab) can be tough to find in a stick. (Non-CVT)
Thanks!

I would go with the 3.0 and quattro, especially if you will be driving in winter with the car. You will lose some highway mileage with the quattro, but come winter you will be glad you have all wheel drive. Finding a manual is going to be difficult. I'm not sure you will be able to find the cabriolet in a manual. If possible, get the tiptronic rather than the CVT if offered. I seem to be seeing more than a few reports of CVT failures.
If you do buy used, make sure that you have the car THOROUGHLY checked by a VW/Audi specialist.

Thanks for the thoughts, I appreciate it.
Anyone-
More NOOB questions:
What's the difference between the CVT and the Tip trans? The 2WD Cab I was looking at had the Tip feature on the shifter, but the salesman said it was a CVT trans. Is there a difference? At this point I was thinking they were the same animal, but after reading david's post it sounds like I was wrong.
Also, what can I expect from a Quattro w/3.0 from a mileage (highway) perspective? Not large road-trip mileage, but just average highway commuting. I have a 3/4 LT Suburban sitting at the ready, so I don't need yet ANOTHER 11mpg vehicle!

Since you're in Wisconsin, you definitely need the quattro in the winter. The 3.0 engine will give more stock HP over the 1.8t, but if you chip the 1.8t, you'll be able to keep up with a 3.0. The 1.8t has much more modding potential then the 3.0, so if you're not going to mod the engine, stick with the 3.0... a very reliable engine. Gas mileage... depending on how you drive. The stock 1.8t averages high 20's (mpg) highway, the 3.0 will get you low 20's highway. Also, go with a manual instead of an auto tranny. The auto tranny will add more weight to the car vs. the manual. Besides, the manual is much more fun to drive.
I am having trouble finding a manual cabriolet. The CVT transmissions that come with the 1.8 have been having some problems with early failure. I'd go with the tiptronic (which is not a continuously variable transmission), quattro and the 3.0.
My ideal would be manual 1.8T and quattro, but Audi didn't make such a beast
