Default Newbie ? regarding catalytic convertor

Thanks for checking this out. My gf has a 1999 A4 V6 nonquattro and recently the catalytic convertor has sounded like the internals have come loose. This was later verified when the CEL/MIL came on and the code indicated the cat wasn't working properly. So I've looked around for the best price on a cat and holy crap $ - are there any other suppliers other than OEM or is there another route I can take? Btw, this car is unmodded and a straight-pipe isn't the answer. Thanks for any replies.

Take the CAT off or hollow it out... It is not mission critical at all. Infact your car will run better without it as it will free up the engine to breathe easier. Or better yet just take it all the honeycomb looking stuff. There isn't any need to replace it. It's just an EPA thing & I have never heard of an EPA officer pulling a CAT cover off to check one. :-) It will make a nice note too, but if you don't like it you haven't lost anything by trying it as you have to buy a new one anyway.

I think it is too. To the point where after I wrote that reply I thought.... Fuc.k.... I haven't even done this on my care yet lol. So I went and did it. I've done it on heaps of other cars no dramas. Give it a go.. You got nothing to lose anyway.

Cars too old I think Jest. (not sure though) but your car really does run better without it.
