Hello out there.

My 01 1.8T has No boost. it is stock, with 100k, and a fresh turbo rebuild, by an German car specialist. (one of the best I have ever come across) He is so busy that he has little time for this type of problem, so he has not come up with a solution yet.

The car runs fine, as long as you want to be passed by scooters. It spools the turbo, I can hear it, but I do not feel it when driving.
No vaccum leaks, diverter valve looks good. ehxaust is clear.

To diagnose, you should have a boost gauge to measure the boost/vacuum pressure. Then look for leaks...since you claim there are no leaks, you are assuming the problem is most likely with the rebuilt turbo. For $35-$50 you can get a boost gauge, install it yourself, and be sure of this. The turbo will not make much boost while revving the engine while the car is in neutral, but you should be able to read boost while the engine is under load (driving - heavy acceleration...)

How do you know the exhaust is clear and not restricted somehow?

How did you check the DV?

 

i also wonder how you know the turbo is spinning? did he use the correct turbines?

boost gauge or vag com is critical......

check for boost leaks

 

He pulled the ehxaust and looked at the turbo as it spun, hooked air line to pipe and blew through, no restriction. as for DV, I just trust him, as I would with my life. he hooked up a pressure gauge, but I don't know exactlly what he found. I'll go talk with him later, Maybe a 12 pack with help get me a better idea what he found.

that doesnt sound right... he pulled the exhuast to look at the turbo while its running? he would have to pull the cat too.... and it would be blowing exhaust straight in his face

 

yup, thats what he did!

 

he could have used the wrong turbine or installed them incorrectly if thats possible??? it would spin but not make boost

Not possible. Its either boost leak or exhaust leak. But u need a boost guage to be sure there is a problem first.

 

The car ran great for 2 months after the rebuild, Smoked for a while after the rebuild..... but not for the last 1500 miles.

I asked him to hook up a boost gauge to check psi, we will see.
I hear the spooling, but cannot hear anysucking, whooshing, orhissing from a leak.
He is on day6 of lets try this, or that........
but I'm more of a fill in, as I get trumped by customers willing to pay full shop rate.

He thinks it may be the air flow meter.
Good boost, it sucks and blows
