Default Notice Concerning Volkswagen Passat 1.8T (1998-2004 models) and Audi A4 1.8T (1997-2004 models)

We are involved in a legal action against Volkswagen of America, Inc. (d/b/a Audi of America, Inc.) The problem with the engine is that it has reduced oil capacity and as a result the engine oil develops “sludge” problems. Due to the reduced oil volume, the oil degrades faster and this results in reduced ability to dissipate engine heat which can result in engine damage or failure.

We are trying to determine how often this problem occurs with this engine. If you have any information or experience with this problem, please contact us.

personally i had sludge and flushed it with no major issues. i would see a better class action with the gauge display IMO since almost everyone has that issue

Isn't sludge caused by not using full synthetic oil - Mobil 1....etc?

I don't think the previous owners of my car used full synth - how do I flush my engine of sludge?

the best way to flush an engine IMO would be to run Mobil 1 in it for about a thousand Miles, and then get another oil change. I really discourage use of the "engine flushes" that quick lubes use, because they can actually cause Oil Leaks, and harm seals/gaskets.... I hated having to sell those at my shop. If you run Mobil 1 long enough, it will Clean your engine as it lubricates. I've taken several Mobil 1 training classes, and have seen engine components to prove it.... You couldn't pay me enough in a lifetime to use Penzoil in my car.

my dad purchased a chevy s-10 new in 86 (yeah I know a long time ago) well after 80k miles using only penzoil the engine went out. The mechanic that changed the engine had my dad come in and look at his old engine. Nothing but sludge, he said it was horrible. My family has never used Penzoil again.

Didn't someone just tell me in another thread that there was no problem with the turbo'd engines?

There was a letter that VW of America sent out in August 2004 extending
the warranty for engine ,1.8t , to 8 years unlimited mileage. This is for oil
sludge. You must have receipts for oil changes. They require 10K mi. synthetic
oil changes.
