OBD Generic vs. VAG
I was thinking of getting a code reader for my car.

i use a alctron and it works fine its just not gonna give u readins on diff areas like tell u ur boost and timing...stuff like that but it will show most engine codes

OBDtool.com sells some generic ones too that will work. Just make sure you aren't using a USB to serial dongle.

Because USB dongles do not limit the baud rate at which data is transmitted to the obd cable like a serial port. You may not be able to access all controllers or any at all. There really is no good substitute for the real deal. IE: Rosstech hardware/software. They have awesome customer service and support to boot. Hate to sound like a commercial, but i've NEVER heard of a complaint about them.
