Default Oil Change

i was searching the forums to find out what kind of oil people use...i found that most people use 15w50 grade for their 1.8T but do i need to change the oil grade with the seasons? and should i be running synthetic....also does anyone here change their own oil and filter? is it hard?....haha sorry for the buttload of questions

Changing the oil is pretty easy. You don't really NEED to be running synthetic oil, but I find my car likes me a little bit better. (less pinging, engine noise). You also can go longer in between oil changes, so the additional cost in going synthetic will even out with regular oil. You might consider using a lighter weight oil in the winter seasons like 5w-30.

here's a link from audiworld about oil viscosity: linky

here's a link to change the 1.8t's oil: tech write-up

15W 50? JMO, but that's too thick for 1.8t. Remember, the thicker the oil the less apt it is to flow into small places. 5W 30 is the recommended weight. If you use that you don't have to change grades for different seasons. The 30 indicates the viscosity of the oil on cold start up. As for the synthetic question, absolutely use synthetic. I use Mobil 1 now, but when I could get it back in Michigan I ran Royal Purple.

yeah i use 5w-30 royal purple or 0-30 mobile 1. my first post was on motor oil.

also thicker oil is harder for the engine to push meaning less horsepower. like 0.15 less horsepower

Doose: "The 30 indicates the viscosity of the oil on cold start up" - Think you might be a little confused.

5w-30:
The first number (5) indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, while the second number (30) indicates the viscosity at operating temperature

Heheh. I wish. Gotta be in surgery tomorrow morning at 6:30 and for some reason I just can't recover as quickly as I use to.
