Default RE: OIL is OIL

we stock a ton of AMSOIL "European Formula" 5w-40 synthetic

it's what we put in our own cars, and what put in all our customer's cars (unless they bring their own stuff of course)

I just changed mine and used Mobil 1 0w-40. I think the choice of oil is an open ended thing. There are several adequate viscosities and there seems to be no agreement on what's better.

An important point is that the 2.8L doesnt need frequent oil changes like the 1.8T.
I'm fuzzy on this point, but most people that complain about sludges and changes at 3500 miles, own a 1.8T
I guess the 2.8 holds for a little more mileage, also because it has a larger oil capacity (almost 5.8 liters against 3.5 of the 1.8T), but I'm not sure if this information is reliable.
Yeah its deffiantely open ended.. The oil in the 1.8t takes a lot more abuse than the 2.8 for sure.. Id change it every 3k miles in either one though to be safe... I hear that you can go 10k miles on synthetic with a NA engine before it starts to break down. Im going on 8k miles with my maxima thats running synthetic.

wow, soo much agreeing to..... agree! my manual has some p/n that starts A... sumthin, sumthin, sumthin...503..dunno. i take my car to one audi dealership renound for their service and when i asked for the litre, i showed them the p/n and i got a long life synth oil from ARAL. i asked "what if i want to use mobil 1 sumthin W sumthin" and they said "respectable oil, okay so long as you're willing to pay for it", which is much less expensive than the ARAL long life.....wierd.

i think about it like this, i work on turbine engines and i dont know of any that use bio oil, all synthetic and turbines burn much hotter. hotter may mean less residue inside, but synthetic helps keep the gunk out too. go with what you know, just as long as you know synthetic.

0w40 full synthetic is recommended for turbo engines, old type oil petrol/gas based is the cause of sludging, its a very long time ago since I seen a car come in for sludging problems in the UK

theres a new notice from Audi stating to use 5w-40 oil only in nearly all cars. Castrol Longlife III is the one they push as the replacement for all the others they previously pushed. This goes for all longlife service audi's except a few exotics. (see below)
You'll find 504 00 or 507 00 is the one to go for. Unless you have a RS6 or RS4 or one of the other exotic's this is the one.

Forget your manual this is now the official line. If you look on ERWIN you'll see the PDF is there for free. Its called.
6_2_schmierstoffkonzept-en.pdf

This finally cut out 8 oil types down to one. For those with high oil consumption i have been told it addresses this problem.

I called Audi USA about an oil question for a 2.8, they said 5w/30, 5w/40, 10w/30 or 10w/40 but it must meet the VW 502.00, 505.01 specifications. Mobil 1, Amsol, AGIP are accepted oils. Synthetic of course.

Personally when I do my next oil change it will be with AGIP European car synthetic, which you can order directly fron them, a case of 12 quart bottles is $57.00

Synthetic PC 5W-40 Meets or exceeds API SL/CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4-98/B4-02, VW 502.00/505.00 and MB 229.1/ 229.3

Synthetic PC 5W-40

Agip Synthetic PC Motor Oils are high performance synthetic oils formulated for all gasoline engines including turbo and super charged performance vehicles, passenger cars, vans, light trucks and SUV’s. It is manufactured with 100% Synthetic Base Oils. Stays viscosity grade. Protects against varnish build up and sludge. Controls high temperature deposits.

Available in 12 X1 qt. case

(25 .lbs)

This goes back to August 2004. There were a group of recommended synthetic oils including

Mobil 1 0W-40
Castrol Syntec 5W40

it goes back to Feb 1st 2005 when the notice was issued.
The document (plus subsiquent emails from Audi) which are now included in HSO chapter 6.2 are quite clear.
If you look down the table and filter all the various types out you come down to a list of two 504 and 507 which Castrol longlife III meets. This is suitable for all cars both petrol on diesel (with and without DPF). The only exceptions are some "exotics" like the RS6 and a couple of others. If i could post PDFs here i would post it.

Why people still insist on complicating this is beyond me. You only need either 504 or 507 oil for you audi. period.

Go onto EWRIN pay the money if you want for the full documents. Its quite clear in the free one. I also have a copy of the Email for Audi on the subject which was sent to EVERY dealer. This is also quite clear. "Audi recommends Castrol" and 504 and 507 is all you need.

Not true. The owners manual says the oil that was first put into our cars is 0w30 for all temp ranges. Then it says if this kind is not available use 5w30 or 5w40. It says use a synthetic or a high quality petroleum. Also if you know that it uses synthetic than use it. I bought my car used and I dont think it had synthetic in it so I use Valvoline 5w30 non synthetic.
Here is what my 2000 audi a4 owners manual says, word for word...

"The engine oil which was first put into your engine has a viscosigy grade of SAE 5w40. You can use this oil over all temp. ranges for normal driving. If engine oil viscosity grade 5w40 is not available you can also use sae 5w30.."

You have a 2.8 and its probably different for you, so dont argue with me bitch... jk
Interesting the difference between your B5 and my B6. Mine says that it came with SAE 0W30, otherwise it's the same verbage.
I've been using Amsoil 0W30 "severe duty" for some time now. Completely eliminated lifter noise I had at start-up in cold (Chicago) weather.

Just go to ERWIN and get the document.
Considering this is the worldwide AUDI technical site one would think you would listen to AUDI !

Forget what the dealers tell you unless its in black and white and issued as a TSB etc. or its on ERWIN its not the official AUDI's line.
