Leakage from the crankvent system maybe (torn hose, leaking pancake valve, etc.)??? I know on my 2002, there was a recall on the hose circled in red, they were known for splitting. A little bit of blowby oil can get out there if there is a crack in the hose.

I will check that to. And where did you get that fuel rail?

The fuel rail is from ATP. I bought a bunch of fittings and braided stainless steel fuel lines from Aeroquipto make up a new fuel line.
Right now it's not on the car because I had a bit of problems with over-tightening the end fittings, causing a fuel leak at both ends of the rail. I have to clean up the lines too, they're too bulky. I'm going to wait though because I am in the process of polishing an intake manifold and a valve cover so I'm going to swap everything at the same time.

If that rear crank case hose is ok, grab a hold of the oil filler cap and see if it feels loose, there is usually two seals on the oil cap and if one or both of them go bad you will loose crank case vapors, even more so at higher levels of boost. Its more likely the rear hose on the back of the valve cover though.

I need to check for boost leaks... actually vacuum leaks.

Would a vacuum leak make this smell to?

My 97 does the same. Smells sweet, like antifreeze or the like. But not down on anything. Boost leak maybe?

Check under the intake manifold for coolant leaks, there is a small plug going into the thermostat housing that only leaks when the engine is cold, and usually prevents the heater from working as well as it should.
There is a new tsb out for it. Only for the 1.8T engine.
