ONE BAD CAT
This Audi is one bad cat! Is it possible to have one bad Cat converter. The place where i bought it from said I had refering to the car that it had one bad cat. Futher inspection it has Two cats. 97 A4 2.8 V6. What goes bad in these? Do I replace both cats(really expensive)? Looking for used good cat.
I was told that it might be indicator of something else. Specifically the Fuel Filter. Have't change this yet. From what i;'ve read I would have to drop the tank.
Side molding fell off today. Rusted POS., inspected the body-clean as a whistle-factory rust proof-i like that. Holding by scotch tape. heheh.
Anyway/? Ideas? callling the good old boys at the junk yard will post later. Peace!

so its a V6 then?? the passenger cat USA is bank 1 and its quite normal for it to go after 100,000k and im told its under warranty before that mileage, no you don't change both cats, do you have any fault codes to back up the faulty catalyst it might be something totally different you know like the O2 sensor???
Not to sure on the codes yet. don't have a diagnotic tool. Calling my "peeps". or go to auto zone to get the code i understand. Hmmm.
will let you know when i get them.
Thanks again for the info.

in the UK its the driver side cat and most common fault is cold water on the O2 sensor and that shocks the catalyst which degrades its performance so in most cases the O2 sensor is to blame even though there is nothing wrong and a drive normally clears the problem ( if your lucky )
hell I found that hard to understand my self lol,
basically if you drive in ice/water/snow conditions this problem will happen so run the engine while its standing till it reaches normal temps then remove the negative wire on the battery leave for 20 mins and the light should clear if not you have a problem

In the us the cat has an 80K 8 year warranty, so you may be past date.
Yes one cat can go bad. Check for codes at autozone and post the number back here. If the cat is bad you will have a CEL.
the side panel is held in place with a small metal strip that fits over plactic clips. the metal easily rusts. You can tack it back onto the clip with a hot melt glue gun. New part is about 30 dollars at aftermarket, not much more from dealer.
