Default one for the TDI drivers

I recently bought a 1.9 TDI Avant and I would like to check the advice the seller gave me. He said that because it's a turbo diesel I should keep the rev counter between 2 and 4. This doesn't present much of a problem it's just that the engine really roars at such high revs and after being used to petrol engines it doesn't sound quite right when I'm trundling along a quiet street. The seller also mentioned that this is the way to conserve fuel but it just all seems illogical. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

You should run a TDI on the highest gear/lowest rpm the engine will pull at.

2000 is high. My TDI (1,9 - 130hp) pulls strong from around 1200 rpm. Driving relaxed, i shift at 2500. This is where the torque is, and there is no reason to go much higher.

As opposed to petrol enginesk, a tdi engine will run cleanes and most efficiently at low rpm because disel need longer time for complete combustion. Revving a TDI will cause it to run less efficient sooting up you exthaust valve, and use more fuel.

Get superchips to chip the ******... I had an A3 1.9tdi (130) and had it superchipped in the UK. Went to about 160 bhp, but the difference was amazing. Wheelspin in 4th, and the traction control would work overtime if you left it on. Used to batter the hell out of Golf GTI's, etc when I had it done...

Thanks for all the feedback. Really appreciate it. I don't know about gallons but it does about 6 litres per 100km. It has the weaker 1.9 engine but there's a chip under the bonnet that makes it stronger than the stronger 1.9 so the acceleration is pretty good. Funny you should mention Golfs Toff, they always want to pass me even when I'm doing a good speed. It's probably a 'complex' thing.

BJ, you never did tell me how many gallons there are in a fortnight. My metric conversion tables don't tell me.

Sorry Greg, I'm from Prague and I can only buy fuel in litres. I really don't know about gallons. But I can tell you that I filled the car up and then did about 600 km in a fortnight which seems pretty good. I used to have an A4 1.8 and it drank petrol like there was no tomorrow.

BJ, you're not understanding my joke. I remember learning the word "fortnight" in some archaic 13th century. But, I don't remember how much time it is. I didn't know that word was still in use.
