Default Overheating Issue

Hello guys...

When I am in stuck in traffic and it's hot outside, my car's temperature gauge starts to climb up. I have no idea what this can be, I drove my car in the winter and even stuck in traffic and this never happened, this only happens when it's probably about 70 or higher outside and in traffic. Today it actually over heated and the thermometer symbolpopped upin the cluster but then traffic started moving and it cooled down to a little less than half (where it usually is when not overheating)... it's a 1997 A4 1.8T and ideas what this can be?

Check your clutch fan, have someone rev up your engine while looking at the fan, if it looks like its slipping or moving slowly replace it. If that kinda confuses you stick a screw driver into the fan while its running, if the fan stops really easy and doesn't really have any resistance the fan clutch is toast.

When is the last time you changed your thermostat? It may be stuck shut. Also check that the secondary electric fan switches on when the engine gets hot.

If his thermostat was stuck shut it would overheat all the time, not when he is just sitting at a stop.

OK, I tried putting a screwdriver into the fan while it was on, spinning but it has a lot of strength so my guess it's good. Can it be the thermostat if not what can it be? This only happens when there is traffic and I am moving slow and it's hot outside if I am on the highway going fast this problem does not happen only in traffic, anyone know what it can be?

Did you check your coolant level?

You could try to bleed the system, it may have just a little air in it, causing the problem only in the situation you described.
