Default Paint bumpers?

Some jackass did a hit and run on my bumper, clear coat is scratched and some deep scratches.

Just wondering, can I just sand off the clear coat and deep scratches patch with bumper bondo. then bring it to auto shop?

or

Do I need to strip the whole clear coat and paint to bare plastic bumper?

The reason I ask is because they want to charge me $400 to fix deep scratches and $300 for paint job.

If I fix the scratches myself by sanding of clear and patch bumper with bumper bondo it wold save me $400.

(to bad my deductable is $500)

Any ideas from the audi pros?

id fix the area and then hit the whole bumper with something like 200 or 400 grit just to scuf the surface and let the shop do the rest, well if it were my id paint it but i do that stuff all the time
