Piston/rod/block limitations of a 12v 2.8?
So my dad happened across a killer deal on a pretty well sorted 2.8 a4. The 170hp lump however is something I dont approve of. My intention is to slap a turbo or two on it, but I'd like to have an idea of the relative strength of the motor--any turbo 2.8's out there that have discovered weak con-rods or pistons? 225-250 hp is the goal (he's a 60yo banker, I don't want to get him into trouble
), and a couple of tdo4-13c's from late turbo volvo's seem like they'd fit the bill (good for at least 200hp on 2.3 liters...). It'll get some log manifolds if I can't get any tubes in there, and the whole thing will get Megasquirted. Do 1.8t IC's fit in these cars at all? Would save me quite a bit of time on fitting an IC... So what are the rods/pistons/block good for when force-fed?

hey, if you're into modding... a 12V 2.8 is the last car you want. the aftermarket is nil, especially in the turbo sections. straying away from NA with a 2.8 would require you to step up to the later year 2.8 30Vs, they have a supercharger from PES. if you wanna tune your car... definatly look at a 1.8T. 150hp stock... but simply adding an APR chip takes you to 200hp, 243lb/tq. then you have turbo upgrades, more chips, the works.

ya, i looked for some kits, but I dont mind that there isnt anything available, I dont mind building what I need from scratch. I just dont want to try to pump out 250hp from a motor whose rod's bend at 230, heh
well... i've never seen it done, so i don't even know wher you could look to find this information out. normally these cars are considered 'duds' as far as modding goes. but they are the most reliable engines they've dropped in an A4... so... maybe? i just think you'll be much better off with any other engine: 1.8T, 2.8 30V or the newer 3.0
poi, the only place for 12V modding is the 12V development forum on audiworld.com....but like check told you...there is no super or turbo charger...no one has done either one successfully from what i've seen, and i've done a fair amount of research.

Ok, let's put it this way.
The 12v is like a marriage. Once you’re in, there aren't many options. Any of the options that come along and you do take... you end up kicking yourself later for. But all in all, marriage is pretty reliable, just not that exciting
The 30v is like dating. Much more options than the 30v. Dating allows for a little bit of switching around and trying things, but there are limiting factors, and you are fairly restrained in who you can date. Dating is more exciting than marriage.
The 1.8T is like a hooker. There are many options, and the quality of hooker you get depends on the amount of money you wanna drop on her. The really cheap hookers aren't exciting at all, there disgusting actually. But throwing a little more money at them shows you a better time, and they defiantly get exciting. The reliability is nowhere near marriage, but the excitement is through the roof.

Putting a couple turbos on the motor though and tuning it wont be much of a problem (I've essentially done the same with a 89 Volvo ...t3 60/63, 20psi, lotsa fun till the transmission kicks the bucket...), I just dont to ask too much of the motor power wise. Ill make sure it doesnt knock, and make sure the AFRs are good, but theres no way to check on the health of the internals

knock of the compression ratio and then you can boost it back up to the original comp ratio or even up to about 12 to 1 equivlent and that will give you the effect of a larger moter. I've looked into doing similar thing and doing a stand alone or a carberated system but lack funding for such an indepth project. Good luck.
