The 1.8t's will be better on gas mileage, but the 2.8's will be longer lasting, less hasle engines. The 97 2.8 engine has 12 valves, and is rock solid. The downside is there are few engine mods available and no ecu chip. The 98 30 valve engine has 20 more horsies and can be tuned a little more.

I'd go 1.8t, much better on fuel.

If you want just plain old rock solid, I've heard the 2.8L 12Valve is the way to go. I don't think I need to say this but get the Quattro model.

I'm with everyone about the 1.8T having better gas mileage.

As for the year, I would look for a 98.5 year model, it has a few nice things on it the previous cars don't come with. Check http://www.audiworld.com/tech/misc1.shtml for a listing.

oops, forgot..the 98.5 I believe comes in the 30 valve flavor for the 2.8L trim.

Good luck, let us know what ya go with!!

Well if you chip the 1.8, you can have as much power as a 2.8, for around 500 bucks.

pffft!!!
The 1.8t is a superior engine. It just takes more maintenance.

The 2.8 leaks oil like a siv when it gets older. V6 has more power initially, but for $500 the 1.8t passes in that dept.
Both cars drive differently too - the V6 has a more luxury feel, with an even power band. The 1.8t feels more jumpy because of its boost.

I would go for a 98.5 like Transverse suggests.

ya no fofecne to the 1.8T owners, i just enjoy the v6 better, i drove a1.8T and didnt get the power i thought it would have with the turbo, but it is so much easier to mod, the 2.8 v6 is so hard to.
