Default Poor Gas Milage

I have an A4 2.8 liter V6 and have been getting about 17mpg according to the trip computer. Should'nt I be getting better mpg?

I have about 51,000 miles on the car. I generally get about 260+ miles per tank of gas. The manual says that the car has a 16 gallon tank, but it seems to only take about 14 gallons when the car says it's on empty with 5 miles left. The manual mentions a 2 gallon reserve. Does this kick in when I use the 14 gallons?

It should show empty and then you will still have 2 gallons left. 260 per tank is better than I've ever been able to get! You may want to replace your O2 sensors, as they can cause bad gas mileage.

Thanks Jestnomen! I guess that's the price you have to pay for the V6! I've searched on "gas mileage" and there were suggestions to replace plugs as well. Would you recommend that as well? What about fuel intake cleaners? It seems that is also recommended.

I appreciate all the help!

Try some fuel injector cleaner (Techron or Redline brand).

Plugs if you haven't changed them recently (like 30K miles).

When is the last time you did basic things like air filter. Are your tires under-inflated?

Could be failing o2 sensors. They fail slowly and may not throw a CEL yet.

Has there been a loss of power? Find someone with a VAG.

Am I glad I didn't get a v6. Last tank I registered 30.5 mpg (Chipped, all highway)
