Probably the definitive noob post, but, tons of Q's
Hey guys, thanks for looking in on the thread.
I have a decent knowledge of Subarus, and I currently own a 2001 Celica GTS, so sorry if a lot of my comparisons come from these two.
I'm thinking about trading in the Celica, mostly due to FWD, annoying 2 doors, and no torque to speak of. But I do have a number of questions since I discovered that Audi offers a wealth of Quattro vehicles.
All questions pertain to 1999-2001 model years with the 1.8T
1: Reliability- I've done a search and the general consensus is that Audi's operating cost is generally above average, and obviously if you take care of one, it'll take care of you. However, timing belt, control arms, water pump, etc. are costly maintenance procedures that must be done ~60k miles. Other than these things, and little bells and whistles going astray, on a day to day basis, do these cars run well consistently?
2: Transmission: It's relatively well known that the WRX transmissions are easily capable of destroying themselves. Other than by being driven by people who have no idea what they're doing, how do the A4 manuals hold up? Can they support ~250-300whp reliably? Can they take some abuse, or should they be tiptoed around?
3: Potential: Are these cars relatively easy to work with? Is 250-300whp reasonably attainable? I see that the available chips give an unGodly boost in power, but what about UP/DP/CB's?
4: Comfort: My car, is very, very small. Can 4 average sized adults fit comfortably in an A4?
5: Driveability: For those of you with at least a chipped 1.8T, how much do you enjoy your daily drive? Is it satisfying, or still leaving something to be desired?
6: The Quattro: How advanced is this technology ~1999-2001? What's the F/R torque split? Is the front an open differential? How would you compare its snow/rain ability compared to a WRX or even an AWD DSM?
Thanks a ton!

1. yes the cars will run fine if you treat it right. replace the things that need to be repplaced and you wont run into larger pproblems down the road.
2. i had 337whp and i could drop it from 7200rmps and the tranny held it find. i also had a stage 3+ clutch
3. a dp will help, up wont do anything, cb's are good but its better to get tbe
4. yes they can. i used to take 5 college guys in my a4. we all fit fine. reason being all my friends drove mustangs and i was the only 4 door.
5. yes the car is satisfying. but remember its not a rocket ship but it is fun to drive.

1. its prudy reliable as long as u take care of it, the car is only as reliable as its owner
im sure u might have coilpack issuse and maybe control arms but its a solid car with a solid engine
2. im sure if u want big power ur gonna need a good clutch
3. there are some turbo kits out there hitting those numbers look into the GTRS and GT17R
4. i dont know about that our rear seats are purdy tight, i would say no but its possible
5. .im chipped and im alrite, i want more but everyone always wants more
6. and the power split is 50/50 (jeff the B7 RS4 and the 25th Special S4 is 40/60)
