So I was driving around with my girl today and decided it would be fun to screw around in some mud off the side of the road. I was driving along probably 10-20mph sliding around corners of the trail and stuff, nothing too crazy... then I got to this part that was looked pretty deep, so I stopped the car, got out, and stuck a stick in to make sure it wouldn't get stuck in the mud. It checked out alright so I went through it, no problem.

As soon as I got out on the other side, I looked behind me and see a big highway patrol dodge splashing through the mud puddles with it's lights on! I look up, and theres a police helicopter, and off to my left parked on the road, theres a highway patrol camaro. I didn't think I had done anything wrong and thought they were going to get the guy in front of me (I was following a guy at a pretty big distance, and he had stopped). I got out of my car with my hands up and walked towards the truck to see what he wanted, and he got on his microphone and told me to put my hands on the car and DON'T MOVE.

I put my hands on the car and wait for him to come over, he asked me if I was carrying any weapons and all that stuff, frisked me. He asked if the car was mine, i told him it was my parents but I've been driving it for the last year and a half.

While he went to run my plates I was just bs'ing with the other officer that came in the camaro. I asked him if it was illegal to be on the side of the road and he didn't know, he said that there wasn't a fence or anything so he didn't blame me for going out there.

Turns out that the police helicopter saw me driving around doing donuts in the dirt, called it in thinking my car was stolen and someone was screwing around in it, I got off with no ticket. The officers did say they didn't know how I managed to get as far as I did without getting stuck, I just told them 'awd and burly snow tires'.

tl;dr
driving in mud, got stopped by police helicopter, truck, and camaro. got off with no tickets. they thought i had stolen my car.

Yep, about 2 hours north of sacramento.

Really if you think about it, it's understandable for the cop to at least stop and check things out.

 

Yeah we got a TON of rain ocadam. ~60mph wind gusts too.

and I'm really not mad they wanted to check it out. A guy on another forum pointed out that if my car DID get stolen, this would be a very good thing.

all i got to say is holy crap haha. i think in new york, you might have gotten a ticket for destruction of property haha.
