Default question about the check engine light

i bought my '99 audi in april of last year and ever since, its had a check engine problem. i have had it fixed twice, first it was a vacuum hose leak and the second time, it was some leak to my turbo charger. i know absolutely nothing about fixing cars or what the problems may be. but now my check engine light is on for the third time and im starting to get a little frustrated. this time i find out that it is some air flow leak again and an o2 sensor problem. my question is if it is that important to have those things fixed/replaced. i really dont notice too much of a difference in gas mileage, except in the first quarter tank, i burn that in about 50 miles. i also notice that my car is beginning to smell like a lawnmower whenever it is idle at a redlight or whatnot and a huge cloud of white smoke surrounds my car in the morning, but my biggest problem is horsepower right now, it isnt picking up well at all. im pretty sure those things have something to do with it, but if you could please help me out here on how much this may cost and if it is that important to have fixed that would be great. my email address is bryantharpe@knology.net if you have any solutions and if you could please put a subject on it that says audi or something because i have gotten several viruses on my computer from emails. sorry again for not knowing anything about cars.

bad o2 sensors can mess with your a/f ratio and can cause your car to run like crap...the hose leaks aren't really too serious but they'll only get worse if they aren't taken care of, eventually they will need to be fixed
