question about oil change intervals
Wallyworld does mine for 30 dollars Mobil 1 0-40.
For a few dollars more than buying the oil, I don't have to crawl under the car.
Synthetic oil has better flow at low temperaturesand is less prone to oxidation and thermal degradation.

what is the difference between synthetic and "non-synthetic" oil. How who does this help the car?

$52 at my dealer here for synth and filter...although they are one of the most unorganized establishments I've ever been too. Made an apointment on wednesday for the following monday morning. Got there and they didn't have me written down for an apointment. They were also supposed to have some prices for timing belt and 90k mile check-up and after over 2 hours of waiting they still didn't have the information. On the upside, I just found a local foreign car mechanic who says he can tackle anything so I'm gonna try him out next time.

The 1.8T engine requires VW 502-compliant (synthetic, usually 5W-40) oil. Change it every 5K miles / 8K km for "normal" driving, more often for city driving. Be sure to use the larger VW 068-115-561B filter, rather than the smaller original equipment 06A-115-561B / Bosch 3421 / Napa Gold 1393. At 40K miles, you should be checking your PCV system, as well, as problems there can promote the formation of the dreaded sludge menace.
