Hey,

I'm a brand new newb here and to Audi's in general. I just bought a 98.5 A4 1.8TQM today and started hearing a rattling sound coming from the engine. As I step on the pedal, its perfectly fine, but when I let go and the revs come down, then the rattling can be heard.

Anybody know what this sound is?? Is it common?

lift the hood and try to locate where the sound is coming from, probably something lose and rattling against something

 

I really can't tell where its coming from. What I can tell you is that it sounds EXACTLY like how a bicycle sounds while your moving but not pedaling (sound of chain moving).

Anybody have any clue?

 

Probably a bad camshaft adjuster. It controls the tension of the chain between the two camshafts.

 

i would bet money on it being the wastegate in the turbo thats my girlfriends is. When it revs up fine but the down rev it makes a clicking.
Turned out to be the wastegate won't close . So it is also low on power. does your car feel low on power?? I bet thats what is you problem.

 

Well, I wouldn't know if it has a loss in power because this is my first Audi. However, I don't feel the boost hit at all...am I supposed to? I had a 89 Supra Turbo before, so its really hard to distinguish if the car is even hitting boost at all.

But I am starting to think that it MAY be the wastegate because when I rev and the revs go down (ex: 5000 rpm ----> idle), thats when the rattling can be heard. I'll look into it, thanks for the help.

 

EXACTLY MY PROBLEM and i feel EXTRA LOW ON POWER!!! WHERE CAN I GET THIS FIXED 95TA AND HOW MUCH? PLUS, I ONLY HEAR MY TURBO AT LIKE 4-6000 RPMS DID U HAVE THAT SAME PROB?

 

i have the same year car 98.5 too! so maybe its a common problem???

 

turbo's shot, I can almost gurantee it. i had the same problem

 

i think you have ran into every problem in the book
