It's about time to do the timing belt job. Find an independent mechanic
that works on German cars. It should cost around $80. If it has been
done leave it alone.

Like any other car manufacturer Audis have there faults and there are bound to be Audis out there that are total money pits. But overall Audis, especially the 2.8, are very reliable. Yes like most euro cars parts and labor are expensive compared to japanese and domestics. Everyone here will tell you, as long as you maintain the required service schedule and don't beat the crap out of the car you won't have major problems. Those people who left those negative comments are usually people who know absolutely nothing technical about cars. If your considering an A4 find out the service history. The timing belt and related parts should be changed every 60k-70k. Find out the service history, if it hasn't been done do it ASAP. While the mechanic is in there have him change the rollers, tensioner, water pump, thermostat, seals, and anything else that looks overworn...All that said, I must let you know that Audi customer service is atrocious. If you want work done find an indepent Audi/VW mechanic. There are a few quality dealerships, but most of them will just rip you off while giving you sh!tty service. We call them stealerships.

Tell your Dad to hop on this place and get educated on realistic real world reviews from logical, or semi-logical people. Tell that n00b to use the search! DAMN![:@]
