The grills don't come off. You have to remove the rear shelf.

There are instructions in the tech section of audiworld

You take out the rear shelf, to which the grills are attached.

see the tech article in audiworld.

HOW DO I TAKE OFF THE REAR SPEAKER GRILLS ON A 97 A4?

THANKS--MIKE
hope this helps out:

1) Lower rear seats.
2) Gently lift right corner of rear deck panel edge up to clear over side panel.
3) Gently lift left corner of rear deck panel edge up to clear over side panel.
4) Gently slide your arm under panel and move side to side, this releases all deck panel clips. Be careful and take your time so you do not crease or crack the panel.
5) From trunk, disconnect center brake light connector. Release trigger on connector and remove.
6) Lift leading edge of rear deck panel and pull toward front of car.
7) With seat belt straps attached to rear deck panel, move panel side to side for access to rear speaker.
8) Lift tape next to speaker for access to speaker connector, release trigger on connector and disconnect.
9) Remove screws securing rear deck speaker and remove. Repeat for opposite side.

Actually, having done it, it isn't intuitive without the instructions.

the other hard part was to figure out how to remove the baby seat clips. You have to remove the plastic cover of the metal clips to access the bolts from the top. Also, don't forget to disconnect the rear 3rd brake light from the trunk. Otherwise you'll rip the wires off.

You don't have to remove the rear shoulder belts.
