Default rear wheel bearing? how much $

I've got a whining noise from my left rear. Probably a bearing. What would be a fair price for repair? Should it be dealer.

Default wheel bearing

About 150 bucks to get it all done at a shop.

Yeah, I did mine myself and it was a lot of work. I recommend a pro but not necessarily the dealership. I'd go to any reputable shop to save some bucks. There's nothing special about it that would require the dealer's inflated shop rates. Brrrrman's rate sounds about right.

ChrisB, how did you do it yourself? The bearing has to be pressed in by a machine.

Newrider, It might not be your wheel bearing, it could be a hub bearing.

David_K,

When I said that I did it myself I mean that I removed the hub carrier and took it to a machine shop to have them press the bearing and then I reinstalled it back on the car. I don't see any way the average guy could remove the bearing from the carrier himself using normal tools.

Newrider, is the noise that you're hearing a low growling noise that gets progressively worse at faster speeds?

I had one done under waranty.

Remove & Install Wheel Bearing 0.20 hr
Remove & Install Wheel Bearing Housing 1.10 hr
Technical Diagnosis 0.20 hr

Total Labor 1.5 hr

I caused this bearing to go bad, by rotating tires that were warn on the outside from the front to rear.

thanks for the info everyone.

It is a growling noise that is definitely related to tire /axle rotation. it seems almost non-existant at low speed and grows to noticeable level on the highway. constant speed - constant noise. I know it may be tire noise but I doubt it. Does anyone have any suggestions as a trobleshooting technique to rule out a bad tire vs a bad bearing? 4 newer tires on the car now.
