it doesn't really matter what octane you use. 87, 89, 91.

all of them are the same, except the highter the octane the harder it is to burn, if you use too low of an octane it can cause your engine to start pinging, which isn't good for your car. if your car doesn't ping at 87, then put 87.

so then wouldn't that mean you need 91 octane at minimum like Audi says and the manual says and the gas door says. Don't buy cheap gas your car will thank you by performing better and giving you less problems down the road.

I always use 93 and usually only go to Shell if there is one around. I dont ever look at the prices.

V-POWER Shell gasoline. 92 octane is usually what I get around here, but if I travel a bit north to the Seattle area I can find some 93, but its usually Chevron and not Shell that has the 93. Don't know why, though.

My experience with 87 is that it defintely is more 'sluggish' compared to higher octances. Audis are tuned to 91 and above (correct me if I'm wrong) and will retard timing if something less than 91 is in the tank. Haven't had anything 'bad' happen from using 87 though, didn't hear any knocks/pings, no CEL, ran a code check through Vag-Com just to see if 87 would throw codes, but nothing significant came up.

My rule of thumb: Getpremium (Ideally 92 or above) as your regular gas, and only get anything lower if you absoluely HAVE to, its just not great for your engine. Lower octance gas also tends to leave more deposits and other crap.

RE: recommended gas

i wish they would sell a higher octane that 91 out here. 91 is typically the highest.

He said he only gets 91, he can't do a 93/e85 blend without the 93.

raises octane 1.8t's love hight octane, e85 has 110+ the problem is its raised by alcohal and it burns cooler but it ruins cats and 02 sensors so the mix is great on 01+ cars

oh i love these arguments about 87 and premium

some people say well, premium is a waste of $,it only hurts your pocket, its no different blah blah blah

YOU bought a high end german luxury car! NOT a honda civic or ford focus!

here is my brief synopsis of why u should use premium gas

besides the fact audi recommends it and im sure they didnt throw darts to figure out what kind of gas our cars need..

premium costs about 20 cents more per gallon
x my car holds 15 gallons
=$3 more per fillup
x 4 fillups at most a month
=$12 a month for premium gas

my lunch will cost me about $9 today, my red bull this morning alone cost $2 plus tax and my redbull/jager at the club on saturday costs $10 plus tip so i think to myself... am i going to be a total cheap ass and put regular gas in my car that may or may not hurt it,cause pinging and buildup? so that i can save at MOST $12 a month?

Not me....... if u do, you are one cheap mofo and should sell your audi and buy a kia or hundyai that takes regular gas
