red lineing?

i have a 97 a4 1.8t Q. and its automatic w/o tiptronic. when i am in drive and i totally floor it, from a stop position, it goes past red line, when this happens i get scared that my car will overheat or sumthing and i let go of the pedal. will it shift?...im kinda scard, will the automatic trans break? or am i just a ***** and it will be ok and shift when it needs to?

How high does it go? Is the ecu chipped?

no its not chiped and it goes a bit past 6 thousand RPM's, i dont know how much further it will go because i always get scard at that point ant let off the gas. isnt automatic trans. not suppost to let you redline your car? My car is bone stock. is there something wrong or will it shift?

The ecu/engine should have a working rev limiter; the ecu cuts power to the engine when you hit the rev limiter. If you seem to get 500rpms or greater than redline, without the loss of engine power, then you do have a problem with the ecu communication. Many rev limiters are set above the redline, but no more than 300-500 over redline.
