The steering rack is easy if its a 1.8T or 2.8L, now if its a 3.0L you might as well stick your head between your legs and kiss your *** goodbye.

do not everrr everrr drive a car without fluid.

if your pump is fine now, and you drive it without fluid....your pump will be toast..

and if its a quattro...have fun turning with now powersteering....it was a bitch for me.

what is the problem with the rack?...is it leaking or is it "seized" and making tht god aweful hissss?

it's a 1.8t quattro the guy says it still works, was leaking a little bit and now is leaking pretty good. but driveable for short distanced if you keep topping off the fluid. i'm pretty mechanical and from reading some writeups and searching it dosn't seem to be too huge of a deal, and pretty inexpencive ($2-300 for the rack) and it sounds like the pump shoud still b good

well your research is wrong if your rack is wht they call a KoYo which is $700

mines a 99 and has the koyo...yurs most likely will too.

and dont drive it if its leaking.....find out where its leaking from
