Default Repost Clutch/ autogear box issue

Audi A4 1995 75,000km 1.8 auto

Sorry to bore you all with this but I am still puzzled.

Driving in gears 1,2 and 3 is perfect. However in Drive when the car hits 4th gear and I am sitting between 1800 and 2800 RPM the tachometer jumps up an extra 200 RPM then comes back down again, almost as if the clutch slipped or engine speed increased.
If I floor it, the car car drops down a gear or 2 then pulls fantastic, no sign of clutch problems. Slow back down to 1800-2800 RPM problem usually comes back. (only in 4th gear). It seemed to do it less when the car has more people in it!!

It has a new gearbox ECU cos of the water leaking into the car this year

I also have the cluncking sound from the suspension..

I dont have a clue how an auto box works. Does anyone have any suggestions beside petrol and matches and other incendury devices ;-)

Thanks

Andy

I had a similar problem with my 97 Auto. From what I gathered the older Auto trannies were prone to strange shifting like that. The only thing I found that helped was changing the transmission fluid and snub mount to dull the shift clunk.

Thanks for that.

I had the auto gearbox oil changed a few months ago, so I will give the other suggestion a try.

Now I come to think of it the problem with the gearbox has got worse with the clunking from the suspension, could this be a coincidence or not. I will try to get the suspension repaired as soon as.

But any other suggestions would be truely welcome.

Thanks again

Andy

Have a few bits changed on the suspension which helped the knocking problem. I also asked them to replace the snub mount which they did with an original audi part. Jumped in the car and zoomed off, went OK for 10-15 minutes then the same problem came back, the revs jumping up and down in lows revs in 4th gear....

Completely at a lost now....

Next resorts are

1. Drive car till it dies completely
2. Take out a huge bank loan and drive it to an Audi dealer here in Norway (€105 an hour)
3. Drive car into wall and claim insurance.....

Mmmmmmmmm

Why didnt I buy a toyota?

Its probably your torque converter clutch engaging and diengaging. The tranny must be getting a weird input from somewhere causing it to lock and unlock the converter. Either that or something mechanical inside the tranny.

THanks for that...

I think I may have found the problem on a ford site!!

They suggest that the if the MAF needs cleaning or replacing then it can stop the clutch converter fully engaging in 4th gear, giving the impression that the clutch is slipping.....My exact problem

So all I have to do is find out what the hell that is, where ir is and how to clean or replace it then I should be Mr Happy Audi chap again :-)

the problem you describe is exactly what i had on my audi 1.8 T auto 76000 miles ; and it just cost me£1400 at the dealership to get it replaced
apparently it was a faulty gearbox input shaft .i dont know what one is but the guys on this site were pretty helpful over th elast few weeks in that i was getting ripped off by audi
. i managed to get audi uk to contribute £160 , then they had the cheek to phone me up for a customer survey .basically audi dont want to know - car is running perfect now so i can only assume that was the problem
