While driving on the highway I notice my RPM's get up to about 4k at 80mph. I have a 2003 manual 5 speed and just curious whether anybody else thought this was kind of high at that speed. Let's say I was cruising at 90mph at about 4.5k RPM's is the engine just fine running at that level for an extended period of time? Also, the engine does sound noticably louder at those speeds/engine level. I kind of wish I held out for a 2004 so I could have the extra gear. Well, just wanted to get other people's opinions. Thanks guys.

 

i have a 99.5 and id say at 80 im at about 3.2k

 

Thats the difference wirh the 1.8t and the 2.8. My car at 80mph is like at 3400 rpms.

 

3900 rpm's. It's perfectly fine. I think that with the b6 5 speed they geared it a little lower because of the extra weight.

BTW, with the 6 speed its not like you just get one more gear on top of 5. The extra gear is spread out, not just added on top of the 5 speed.

 

The more power you have the more you wish it was that way....I need a 6th gear

Mine's the same way. About 4K at 80. '02 A4 1.8TQM.

A 6th gear, or a taller 5th would help. There's not that big a difference between 4th and 5th on these cars.
