Honestly, if I were in your shoes I wouldn't be calling a lawyer. Especially if the guy is suppose to move away, that will just get too expensive (and I'm sure thats what this guy was thinking too)
Instead, I would hunt him down and have him beatto a bloody pulp.... and then beat him again until he had to drink all his meals for the rest of his life. People have to learn to stop ripping people off instead of learning to not get ripped off.

Is it weird that I almost don't feel that bad for you? I mean taking your car to some guy that ended up getting in over his head somehow. Getting a $1200 job done for like $350? I mean if so many guys on here can do it and this 'mechanic' can't figure it out, there is something wrong.

Did you even read most of the thread? He sends cars from his lot there and the guy was doing it for him for $100 as a thank you for all the work. Also you can get it done for less than $800 if your smart, which you dont seem to be.

Cincy, I read every word of this post.
He sends cars from his lot there. What kind of cars, Hondas and Chevy Cavaliers? New or used? The Goodyear across the street from my place does excellent Honda/Nissan work but won't even put my Audi up on the lift. They DO NOT work on Audis (all I wanted was an alignment) and they told me so up front. This guy may work on the occasional Merc, BMW, etc, but if he doesn't do involved German work, maybe he really isn't qualified.
Yes the mechanic did it as a favor. Personally, I wouldn't do it for $100. And as I posted, my guess is that he did not know how involved it was if he was doing it for $100. A point strengthened by the fact that he could not complete the job.
The price depends on your location. It can be done for $800 in some places. There is a guy near me in SC that does them for $800. I wouldn't let that A-hole touch my car though. My mechanic charges $1200. I haven't had it done (may try it myself when needed), but I would pay more for the guy I TRUST and the guy that has proven that he knows his stuff.
I don't appreciate the not smart comment, but I won't get into that. I have a lot of respect for CincyTT, he knows way more about cars that I do. Always listen to this guy, he is hella Audi smart.
And I am not trying to be a jerk. I just hate reading these posts about someone who got a 'great deal' on something and the ensuing nightmare that follows when they get screwed or their car gets messed up, or they end up getting it redone for twice the price as it would have cost if they just had it done right the first time. For crying out loud, I don't give a crap what the situation is or who is hooking you up, blah blah blah, I always think 'What the heck did you expect for $100??????'
And AMEN to 99A4NOW people do need to stop ripping others off instead of people needing to learn how not to get ripped off.
But don't go beat the guy up. When you are in jail you will not think this the wisest idea as your situation will be much worse than it is already.

RE: screwed by mechanic on timing belt
correct. If i had been smart and simply taken it to the audi specialist two blocks away from the get-go, i would have had it all done for 700 including parts. Now, i'm looking at spending way more than that and not even getting as many new parts. The other mechanic wasn't doing this job to make money, he was doing it to say thank you and to keep up good relations with my company so i would continue to send business to him. At this point i dont even care if the belt gets changed, i just want my effing car back.....

TDRILL: it is very clear you do not work in the automtive industry, however i do see your point. In business, it is common place to hook up an individual so that they will bring more business to you through thier business. In no way shape or form did i deserve what happened.

Please do not misunderstand me that I think you DESERVE this. No one deserves to get screwed like this, but everytime you accept one of those hook ups, remember what it is, a hook up. It comes with no guarantees. You are not his customer, he is doing you a favor. If it goes to crap or he can't do it, "sorry man I can't complete that favor for you", not "your a paying customer and I need to fix this because its legally binding as a business to do so". We are talking about a pretty big / expensive favor in this instance though, not him taking you to a baseball game to say thanks for all the business you sent his way. This mechanic did not handle the situation properly. If I was doing someone a favor like this and got stuck, I would actually help pay for them to have someone fix what I messed up even if my favor ended up costing me a chunk of change. But thats me.
It sucks getting screwed and even though this mechanic is in the wrong I still feel that you should not involve a lawyer. As a favor, I think you take the risk of this happening, cut your losses and run. And I feel your pain, because though a very different situation, I just paid off a $1900 "I just got screwed hard" bill just last week. And I thought all about the jerk that did it to me and how to get him back and how its not fair, but you eventually get to the point where its not worth the hassle and I would rather pay off the $1900 and never have to deal with this situation again. Does it suck hard, yes, do you deserve it, hell no. Part of life. I promise you that you and I won't make the same mistake a second time.

RE: screwed by mechanic on timing belt
i have no intentions on getting a lawyer, there is no case to be won, and no mechanic to be found. There was no legally binding contract involved. The only legal basis i would have is him stealing my water pump, but going after him for that isn't worth my time.
Basically, he realized the job was a pain, he is moving away and no longer needs my business, and he said **** it. Was it right? hell no, does he deserve to be beat down? hell yes.
The biggest shame for him is that prior to this he had my respect as he had done alot of good work for me, and now i see him as a waste of life. Respect is interesting, very hard to gain and incredibly easy to lose.
I will take this situation(as i do any bad situation that happens) as a learning experiance. I just hope it isn't a 6,000 dollar one.
