When you shift higher, the rpms are higher when you hit the next gear, giving you a little more speed once you get there. I know it drops off in the higher rpms, but the boost from hitting the next at higher rpm seems to make up for it.

Doesnt the k03 lose its momentum after 5k rpms though? Of course this would be different with RG's setup.

what momentum would it be loosing. the Idea is to have the rpms as high as possible when your entering the next gear. unless your power curve goes down after like 4500. But if your goes up the hole way(like its supposed to), then the higher you shift. the morepower your engine is in the possition to make.

I'm having a really hard time explaining it. sorry.

The flow of boost gets more turbulant at those engine speeds (rpms) with the puny little k03 and boost becomes less efficiant even though you are still pushing 15-20 psi past 5k rpms.

Shift points are based on power curves, shift almost as high as your HP curve goes, for you redgoat you should shift at around 6200 RPMS, atleast from what im reading on this dyno chart

Here is a dyno chart from a 1.8t w/giac. This is just an example for the k03:
See how it starts to drop around 5k rpms?

Im sure APR and other chips are slightly different, but from all that ive read, with the k03, the power curves all drop around 5k rpms.

well that pretty wild. I would attribute the power drop primarily to the fact that the 1.8 at a given (5000K) rpm. is drawing "X" amount of air through the prosess of the intake stroke. With the increase in engine rpms. the amount of air needed to "satisfy" its needs also goes up. I'm under the impression that the K03 isn't capable on suppling or "satisfying" the 1.8. So inturn the engine becomes less efficent. the boost may still remain the same thou. I observed somthing back in my hotrod days. When I was building blown engines. the simple act of porting the heads would at time drop the boost by as much a five pounds, yet the engine would perfome better. This could take up pages. so I'll stop now. but thanks for the dyno sheet.

ANd given that dyno sheet I would start by tring out shifiing at 5.5 to 6 or so that the rpms would drop to the peek of the torqu band when I upshifted. lots of trial and erar, to find what would work the best though.

ya however you want to look at it.. Thats why people upgrade to the k04 or larger turbos + software, they got a lot more out of the engine's capabilities.
