Default Shocks

I know that the preferred shocks for lowered springs seem to be Bilstein but for my 1996 A4 Q 12v, I do not think I need such a performance shock. I will be lowering my car and want to replace the shocks. Is there a good quality shock that would work for my application. I will obviously not be putting any performance engine parts into my A4 due to the lack of modifications so the springs will not be pushed to the limits. Basic driving conditions only. Any suggestions? Thanks.

get the bilsteins...the shocks aren't as important as the springs. race springs will be very stiff and aggressive. sport springs will be better for daily driving...neuspeed sport springs are the softest from what i've heard

Price wise, there has to be a better alternative. I do not want to spend a crap load of money on a product that provides superior performance for vehicles that need it when my car will be severely underpowered and will not demand such performance. Why pay for something you don't necessarily need especially if there is a viable alternative...hence the reason I am asking. So is there a cheaper alternative that will do the job?

Nope. There's no market for aftermarket shocks that don't offer a gain in performance, so nobody makes such a thing. You could try the A4 sport suspension, lowers it a good amount from stock height and rides comfortably.

Besides, it's not like the handling balance of your car is Ferrari-threatening. Even without any engine modifications, you can understeer like a pig dog. Your car could use the better damping without having 250hp. If you put the springs on a stock shock, the stiffer springs will transfer too much energy for the lame-*** factory dampers and blow them out, and then your ride quality will be worse than anything else.

Bilsteins won't wreck your ride quality, and like I said, nobody makes a stock-performing shock, because, well, why? Even if they did, it would cost the same as a Bilstein anyway.

OMG! please, you don't drive an 87 honda accord anymore. DO NOT CUT/HEAT/COMPRESS YOUR SPRINGS! ok, now that that's been clarified...

if you have the non-sport suspension, i have a oem sport suspension for a 2.8q for sale..check the classifieds. that's the closest you'll get to stock performance with a lower ride height..but it's still much stiffer than the nonsport

You don't seem to understand. I will be putting racing springs on the car. I do not want to pay the $500-$600 for Bilstein shocks because I do not see the point in buying the best racing shocks for a car I will only be doing daily driving in. I want an alternative shock that is cheaper and has okay performance to match my race springs. I do not want to keep it stock nor do I want to do something stupid like cut springs or heat and compress them. I am just looking to save some money on the shocks if possible. What are the other alternatives?

If you want race springs, you will need the performance shocks. Thats all there is to it. Your best bet is to find some used bilsteins.
