Default Short Shifter Help

Anybody know where I pop off the boot or whatever so I can stick in a new short shifter. I saw the write ups but the were for a different kind of style. Thanks

you must remove the whole center console, I believe you start w the bolts under the little ashtray for the rear passengers

I don't have any pictures, but you have the older style console like mine, it's a bit of a PITA, but it's not terrible...

what kind of SS did u get?

Im sure some1 on here can give you a point in the right direction, there are a few different DIY's but I have yet to see one for our console...A tech can prolly post a skematic (spellol) that should help you along

gl!

Yeah our console sounds like a real PITA do to this but guess it gives me time to spend with my baby. I got it off of ebay. I spent like $25 in all.

Can't you just push on the rear part of the boot and lift up? Mine worked like that... didn't have to remove the console

No he doesn't, he doesn't have a 98.5, so he can do it without removing the console. I did it without removing my console...

^he's talking about me, my car is the most odd stup I have ever seen on a 1998

The car was sold in february of 1998, but it has the facelift tail lights and it doesn't have the Audi insignia under the side markers....

and on top of that it has wood trim and it's a 1.8T....I like to call it a 1998.5 because when I bought it that's exactly what it looked like (and still does)

and yes I have the 1998 (older) interior, seats, center console (so on and so forth)....

quattroa4 has the WEIRDEST mix of parts on his car, I've been trying to figure it out but still haven't been able to.

I have a 1998.5, and I installed my short shifter (dieselgeek) by just popping out the shift boot and using some creative wrenching.

Just wiggle the 'frame' of the boot around and squeeze it, it should pop right off.

^for sure

yeah the boot is the easiest part, but for the older interior the whole friggin center console has to come out, cu we don't hva that plate that slides out, its like one solid piece from the shifter all the way around the heater/radio/ashtray....

you really don't need to remove the boot in the older interior cuz you have to remove what is is attached to in order to swap in the ss...
