Default Should I buy this A4?

Hello. I new to these forums and I would like to get some advice.

I'm a 19 year old college student looking for a first car. I saw an Ad for this:

Its a '98 A4 with 152,000 miles.

The Owner wants $2000 for it, but its full of problems.

It has an oil leak, needs transmission work (2nd gear),misfiring( ignition coil, and or plugs), needs front brake pads, and needs $400 in body work.

For a college student, is buying this car worth it, and how much will it cost me to fix this? Any way I can do any of the work myself?

Thanks

That’s your first car, u dont know much about cars, and most likely you wont fix it yourself. even if you do most of the job yourself, it will cost u.
oil leak could be fixed as simple as tightening all the parts together or a lot more complicated, dont have any estimates, but just to remove oil pan u will have to pay lots of money, coz its an audi not any other car. $600-800 for used, but in good working condition trany + $400 if you have nice and mechanic shop. misfiring could be more then just a bad coil or plags.
Like u said +400 in body work and $60 for new pads, if u do it your self.

First, i wouldn’t recommend this car, audi is not easy to work with w/o any experience, unless u have someone who worked on audis before and will help u a lot. and second, if it would be easy fix like ignition coil and tightening oil pan, dont u think who ever sells this car would fix it and then try sell it.... that’s what most of the ppl would do.

My father works in the car industry and knows a lot of repair shops and etc, and he has his own mechanic, etc, so maybe that'll help? If I buy this car now, could it survive me driving it for another month or so?

audi is a good car to have,it sould be ok for a few years,.... u should talk to one of the mechanics then, for more accurate estimate, and make sure theres no other surprises like broken timing belt, antifreeze in your oil, blue smoke.... it would be really sux

Is it an auto or a manual? If it is an auto, don't even think about it if it has transmission problems.

If you are on that low of a budget that you need to buy a $2000 car, don't be looking at an Audi. That thing is just going to be a headache, it doesn't sound like it was taken care of very well. Just my .02.

Its manual. I'm not looking for a $2000 car, im looking for an A4. I Just found this and thought maybe it would be a good investment. It would teach me how to deal with a car and I would enjoy driving it if everything goes well.

that sounds like a lot of problems... if you aren't on that low of a budget i would keep searching...

with college you wont have enough time that you will need to commit to fixing that thing and with an audi you are going to run into problems anyway so don't start yourself off with so many! and like the other person said, you don't really know the extent to which you need to repair the current problems so the costs could really add up..

i say keep looking! there is bound to be a better one out there

What I have noticed about audi's is if it has had a lot of problems then it will continue to have problems. If you get one that hasn't had any porblems other than the normal ones then it will be good to you. STAY AWAY from this one. It will be in the shop more then on the road.
