Default Siping Tires

Has anyone ever siped their tires out there? I just got off the phone with Discount Tire and they'll run all 4 tires for $48. According to them it should increase traction by 30% or more without adding any road noise on dry pavement.

My question is for anyone that has had their tires siped is, have you seen any performance loss on dry pavement? I've got some very aggressive all weather falcons that are pretty bad on the snow. They're sweet for water but on snow the grooves get packed and they are worthless.

Isn't that where they cut small diagonal grooves into your tires?

No, I haven't had it done, but this is an interesting questions.

I've siped all my truck tires for years. I definately see an improvement in dry, wet traction.

If it's a winter tire i'd probably sipe it. if it's a summer tire... I'd probably skip it.

I'm going for it. I'll warm up my tires and thrash them before and after. I'll let you know if I see any difference on dry pavement and on snow.

Here's a better write-up for siping: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siping

A 1978 study by the U.S. National Safety Council found siping improved stopping distances by 22 percent, breakaway traction by 65 percent, and rolling traction by 28 percent [1].
Here is a decent picture:

oooooh yea ive always had my ttruck tires siped, it actually quiets the ride down (in MT truck tires) and believe it or not made the tires last longer, i say go for it, thats a good deal... usually they charge a bit more than that on used tires because they have to remove all the little bits of rocks and debris out of the tread, i guess that stuff will ruine the siping machine??

Never heard of this siping until this post. Interesting stuff. Might look into doing this myself. What does the average cost run at to do this?
