Snow Rims
When there's snow in your rims and you drive at approximately 50 mph, will your steering wheel shake? My wheel just started shaking vigorously when I hit about 50 and one of my buddies says it's because of the snow throwing the tires off of balance.
Its not like 50mph is the magic # but the faster you go the more noticable it is. It only happens when the snow gets caught up on the inside of the wheel.I never had the problem on stockers but lately its been an issue with the 18s.
Whenever you're driving in 4"+ of snow in a spirited manner (i.e. steering with the little pedal) there is a good chance that you'll get a layer of snow stuck to the rim. It's a lot easier to get it out when it's still snow, 'cuz it will turn to ice very quickly from brake heat. I've gotten in the habit of checking right after a bit of rally running and whenever it's been out in a parking lot with snow drifting around. In the fall I clean and polish the insides of the rims to minimize the potential of snow and slush from sticking. If we didn't have 7"+ wide wheels it would self clean.
I have stock, and that happens a lot w/ either snow or dirt (mud). It was happining so much I made a speical tool out of wood to scrape out the wheels. Sometimes even if I took it to a car wash to wash out the packed in snow the bit of H2O left in the wheel froze and made it just as bad.
when i had my GTP (front wheel drive) it used to happen to the front wheels. I wasn't prepared for it to happen to all four wheels in the Audi...product of all four wheels spinning. It took me two stops to realize i had to do more than clean out just the front wheels.
