I was driving to work and I smelled something burning under my hood but then the smell went away. When I was hitting boost it felt all jerky so I knew something was up. I pulled into work and the idle was somewhat bad. I turned off my car and smelled burning again and popped the hood, and I see sparks flying near my turbo. I ran into work and told someone to get a bucket of water or fire extinguisher. Dumped some water on the turbo and pulled a harness that caught fire off the turbo. What happened was my airbox temp senor harness was touching my turbo and melted the harness and almost caused a huge engine fire.

My car is at the shop now, I had it towed last night and I'm not sure what its going to cost. I got a picture of the burnt harness.

You threw water on your turbo? How did that work out?

 

Well, it probably got really wet and extinguished the smoldering wire harness.

Just a hunch...

 

Yeah just the harness is damaged not the engine.

 

Be careful, though, dumping water on the engine is a good way to crack a manifold or turbo housing, since they are hot and water is not!
