is it an after market radio?? if it is you need to disconnect the radio power leads because the original radio is connected to the DLC pin 7 so the dealer can scan the full system, you could damage your laptop/PC

well im only quoting Audi, the reason you get this problem is because your radio has a permanent memory live and a switched live so the DLC grounds pin 7 K line to interrogate the ECU and by having and aftermarket unit that pin would short your PC because it would be live + when it should be grounded,

I can only hazard a guess that what I have said could be the problem even though you have used VAG on it before, the problem is well known in the dealers that's why they wont scan newer cars without the original system in, try disconnecting the radio power supply ( both live leads ) and see if the problem goes away
