Default Sputtering at 1500-2000RPM

I have a 2002 Audi A4 1.8.

I'm getting sputtering at around 1500-2000 RPM, but only when accelerating at that RPM. In other words, if I'm crusing down the road in that RPM range I'm fine. But if I have to accelerate, or if I'm going up a steep hill where a higher load is placed on the engine, I get a sputtering when the engine is in that RPM range. Once it's higher than 2000 or so, I'm fine.

Just looking for input from anyone who may point me in the right direction here.

It is time for new plugs, so that could be doing it. I'm going to research posts on the forums about what type of plugs to get, pop them in and see how that works. I'll report back if that resolves the issue, but it may be a day or two.

Thanks!

-Chris

Well, I'm still having this problem. I put new plugs in and it's still going on. I really have no clue what is going on.

This *might* be related to a small boost leak I think I have, but it feels different than when that happens for some reason.

So, currently, I have three things wrong:

1) This.
2) A small, known boost leak I'm going to take care of when it warms up
3) A weird clicking sound that started this morning (see my other post).

hmm...

is the CEL coming on? if so, have it vagcom'd and post what codes you're throwing. sounds like it could be coil packs, which aren't too expensive.

There has been a few posts on this before. I have the same issue, it seems to happen only in 2nd gear while using the auto in tip mode. I've been just dealing with it so if you find out the cause please let us know.

I have a multitronic, and it happens to me in any "gear" that causes a load on the engine and the RPMs to be 1600-2100 or so. It happens when in D as well as when changing the "gears" myself.

I was afraid it was the tranny at first, but I'm pretty sure I've ruled that out. I always get sick to my stomach everytime I think about dealing with my tranny... I sure do hope I never have to... but yeah, that's beside the point.

EDIT: CraigA4 -- I've looked for simliar posts but I don't see any. Could you PM me some if you can find them?

transmission fault codes you need to be looking for but a common problems with the ( by wire ) type is the linkage needs to be set, if fly by then VAG is required

some 2000+ cars have CAN bus high speed connection so no wires and older systems are like throttle cable type
