Starting Problems?
Hello everyone i am a *** to audi. My girlfriend just got a 99 A4 its got 66,000 miles and in great shape, but tonight i was driving it and i went to start it up and it would not start. It just sat there and cranked over. I tried it a couple times and then waited i tried it again and kind of pumped the gas pedel and then it started. It was kind of a shaky start thought. It did that to me twice tonight. My girlfriend said the same thing happened to her once before. The second time it happened i had the door open and it smelled like gas. So i don't know but is it possible that it was flooded. I was thinking that maybe it could be a fuel filter. I you guys have any idea i would appreciate any help you can give me.
I would have a full service done including fuel filter, this problem could be caused due to heat/air temp where you are its called ( vapour lock ) what happens is after a run the fuel vapour stays in the intake so when you try to start it the sounds you get are like its flooded, no good pumping the peddle because its injection and a pressurized system not like the old carburetors so pumping does nothing if not making the problem worse ( you have to floor the peddle to clear the vapour lock till it starts ) flooring the peddle vents the intake and other bits
maf or ects are my bets...
Maybe spark plugs...
Get her car scanned at autozone for fault codes.. There is probably one stored in there that relates to the problem... And maf=mass air flow sensor located inside the air box... and ects=engine coolant temp sensor located in the back between the engine and firewall. If either one are bad, they are gunna make the engine run rich and youll have startup and some driveability problems. If it drives ok once its started up its probably the ects, but if the car is lacking performace its probably the maf. .... Or I could be totaly wrong.. Fuel pump/filter stuff are possibilities too 4 sure.... Just get scanned.
I used to have the same startup problems with my maxima where it would smell like gas and had to floor it to get it to barely start.. sometimes it would start up for 1 or 2 seconds and cut off. Had a ects code, replaced it for $15 and its all good
