I have an 06 A4 TDI with a starting problem from new.
The problem is intermittent and when it occurrs, it sounds as if the heaters
had not got a chance to heat prior to starting. i.e. splutters and eventually
fires. I have had the car at two audi garages and none of them can find a
fault. Have had Audi 80s and A4 for 27 years but this will be my last since
Audi are unable to resolve this embarrising problem.
Any ideas.

 

didthey do a fuel pressure test from cold then from hot? air in the system tends to cause hard start and dosnt leave any fault codes, it sounds like it needs to build up fuel due to air being purged on start-up and one way to test that theory is to manually pump fuel by the plunger and if it starts straight away suspect the fuel system has an air leak

I was not informed of what tests the Audi garages carried out. Your advice sounds good
but where doI find the mentioned plunger or do I need to take the car back to the garage
in order for this test to be carried out?. Again thanks for your advice. I will let you know
how I get on.

Avant 80 is in the UK, but most of us are from the US where the TDI wan't imported in the Audi, but was imported in VW. Notwithstanding Avant80s advice, I'd suggest trying the VW forums as they are more familiar with this engine.
