Default Std suspension shock (damper) options?

Vehicle in question is an '01 1.8 5spd quattro sedan w/ standard (not 'sport') suspension w/ approx 60kmiles.

Bilstein makes a direct replacement damper they tell me is 10-15 "stiffer" than original equipment. I have never had Bilsteins' but the brand name carries some good will and perception of value. Are there other brands you have used that I should consider? (like she said, stiffer would be better).

H&K is my preference, go to www.tirerack.com and look at thier options. Eibach makes a full kit for around 1000 that includes new springs new shocks and an anti-roll bar check it out
