Stock 2003 1.8t Tip
I'm looking at getting an '03 a4 1.8t with tiptronic. I've test driven a couple, but today was the first time i got it on the freeway. Let me say, I was extremely dissapointed. Going about 70 mph, i floored it, and it barely went anywhere. It was slower than the family car - a sienna minivan. Driving around on the side streets - it felt great. But on the freeway, it felt like i was driving a toyota corolla.
Do you think there was something wrong with this particular audi? Or is that just how the stock b6's drive? Is a chip going to dramatically improve that? Is it because it's a tiptronic?
Thanks for your help - sorry about all the newbie questions.

Just keep in mind these things are 4 cylinder engines. If you want some juice to your ride, you either have to buy a 6 or 8 cylinder or do some work to your turbo'd 4 cylinder. I mean if Audi sent their cars out the door as badass as you can get them, then wouldnt that take all the fun outta modding them???...
The potential is there, but you gotta do some work to get there. Or just get an S4 or something like that.

Yeah these are 1.8's. I find stock acceleration rolling from around 50 is the best but 70 wont be very exciting. Are you hitting the kickdown as well. Im not sure if 2003 had it, but my car has a kickdown wher I can floor the gas and then once floored click it in and it downshifts a gear. If you can try that. Chip will make a huge difference though, after driving chipped driving stock feels weak!!!!
Good idea for sure on the mechanic. Thats the only way to be for sure on used cars.
But dont let it discourage you that a stock a4 wasnt the most exciting car you've drivin before. If you do decide to do some work on it (i.e. Chip + DV, new Cat-Back exhaust + HFC, suspension) you wont be disappointed with your ride. And, if you like to tinker with things, it can be a good learning experience.
Also, the stock ECU only really utilizes your turbo to about half or 1/3 of what you can get out of it with a Chip, so it will make a big difference. Add in a new exhaust and it sounds pretty mean for a 4 banger...
